ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Twelve people died and more than 180 were hurt in crashes as people traveled through the state for the Fourth of July, according to the Georgia Department of Safety.

The travel period started at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 5. During that stretch, state troopers investigated more than 295 traffic crashes.

Troopers addressed nine of the deaths, while the Atlanta Police Department, Cobb County Sheriff's Office and Richmond County Sheriff's Office reported the other three. Last year, 13 people died during Independence Day travel in Georgia.

Overall, troopers and the department's Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers conducted more than 20,000 traffic stops and issued more than 10,000 citations. In addition, 425 people were arrested for DUI.
