ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Atlanta police said they've arrested a suspect in a deadly Fourth of July shooting.

Shortly after 1 p.m. on July 4, officers responded to a person shot near 395 Pryor Street SW in Mechanicsville.

Officers found a 39-year-old man under the I-20 bridge with a gunshot wound. The victim, identified as George Watson, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said two suspects, a man and a woman, were observed leaving the crime scene after the shooting.

Last week, the Atlanta Police Department released photos showing the pair leaving the area.

The woman was wearing a brown top, black pants a blonde-and-black wig and black-and-white sneakers.

The man was wearing a black T-shirt with a white graphic on the front, denim jeans, black-and-red sneakers, reflective glasses, and a pink towel draped over his shoulder. He also had a  dreadlock afro hairstyle,  according to police.

Last week, the department urged anyone who recognized the pair or had other information on the case to submit a tip anonymously to the Crime Stoppers Atlanta tip line at 404-577-TIPS (8477), online at www.StopCrimeAtl.org, or by texting CSGA.

On Sunday, police said they arrested 43-year-old Jeffery Carter on charges of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

According to arrest warrants, Carter allegedly killed Watson by shooting him in the face with a 9mm handgun.

Police said Carter has an extensive criminal record, including  one cycle out of Georgia  for theft by shoplifting, and  18 cycles out of Florida  for charges including breach of peace, trespassing, burglary, petty theft, child abuse, battery, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, sale of marijuana, and another charge involving counterfeit money.
