ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his roommate at a sober living program in 2024, the Cherokee County District Attorney's Office said.

The 27-year-old Triston James Sexton stabbed 55-year-old David Courtney Phelps to death on Sept. 19, 2024. The pair were enrolled in a sober living program and lived in a Woodstock apartment with three other men.

Phelps was scheduled to leave the program the following week.

The other men living in the apartment said Sexton had exhibited erratic behavior in the days leading up to the killing.

 The evidence showed this was a merciless and deliberate attack - not an impulsive act. For David, the attack inflicted extraordinary pain, fear, and suffering. The sheer number of wounds and the circumstances of the killing made the defendant's intent unmistakable,  Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Visockis said.

Sexton pleaded guilty to malice murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.

He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole and will be eligible for parole after 30 years.
