ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A student at Atlanta Technical College fatally shot himself Monday morning after his gun accidentally went off in a classroom, injuring a fellow student, according to police.

Around 8:45 a.m., Atlanta police officers responded to the college off Metropolitan Parkway in southwest Atlanta.

Officers found a student dead in a bathroom from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, they said.

Police said another student had an apparent gunshot wound to their leg. The injured student was alert, conscious and breathing when they were taken to the hospital.

According to the preliminary investigation, the deceased student had a firearm in a classroom, which accidentally discharged, hitting the other student in the leg.

The student with the gun then left the classroom and went to a bathroom,  where he sustained a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound,  police said.

The deceased student's identity has not been released.
