ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A now-former Monroe County animal control employee is facing felony charges after allegedly killing four puppies by putting them in an incinerator, according to the sheriff's office.

On Monday, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office received a report that the puppies were put in the incinerator at the Monroe County animal shelter while they  were presumably alive  on June 18, said a spokesperson for the sheriff's office.

Hours later, deputies arrested animal control officer Carlos Santillan on four counts of felony cruelty to animals.

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners quickly terminated his employment.

Further details on the incident have not been released. The investigation is ongoing.
