A lawsuit at Loyola University that was the focus of an NBC 5 Investigates report is now sparking protests on campus. Students gathered Monday afternoon, calling for accountability after 10 former students accused the university of failing to properly respond to reports of sexual assault. People are angry. We all believe that this is completely unacceptable. Women on campus don't feel safe. Queer people on campus don't feel safe, said Lucia Battista, a freshman at Loyola University. Stream NBC 5 for free, 24/7, wherever you are. WATCH HERE WATCH HERE I am deeply devastated by the accusations of all the Jane Does, said Caroline Fawcett, a senior at Loyola University. Ten young women filed a lawsuit against Loyola in 2022, alleging they were sexually assaulted while attending the university. In court documents, they say Loyola systemically mishandled and underreported student complaints of sexual misconduct dating back to 2011. NBC 5 Investigates spoke with Jane Doe G, who pursued a Title IX investigation after her alleged assault in 2019. There were instances where they asked me to prove that I had been assaulted, to touch myself in the way that he had touched me, and that was obviously very distressing and like very traumatizing because in that moment I knew that they were questioning whether or not I was being entirely truthful of what had happened, Jane Doe G said. Loyola University said in a statement it could not comment on pending litigation, citing the need to protect the privacy of those involved and the integrity of the legal process. However, Loyola University Chicago always prioritizes the safety of our students. As such, Loyola takes reports of sexual misconduct very seriously, and responds promptly, equitably, and in accordance with our legal and ethical responsibilities to promote a safe and inclusive learning environment for all, the university wrote.
