A construction worker was flown to the hospital in critical condition Friday afternoon after being hit by a big-rig along Interstate 35W in Alvarado, police say.

The crash happened at about 1 p.m. near I-35W and County Road 401 in Johnson County. Police said the truck left the roadway, struck the worker and then crashed into the center median before coming to a stop across the southbound lanes, blocking all traffic.

The injured worker was taken by CareFlite to a nearby hospital. The worker was part of a team operating in the area.

The crash shut down all southbound lanes of I-35W for several hours. The highway has since reopened, but the crash remains under investigation.
