DETROIT - Jaquoya Wix's family says she had made meaningful changes in her life before she was killed Sunday afternoon in what police describe as a random attack in downtown Detroit. She was such a good person, and she really tried every day. She definitely had a lot of times where she didn't make a lot of good choices. She knows that. I know that. Our family knows that, but at this moment in her life, she was doing really well, Wix's sister Alicya Wix said. The 34-year-old had been living with her sister in St. Clair Shores. She took the bus downtown to her job at Chipotle. She was proud of herself. I was proud of her. She made a lot of strides from where she came. It's just heartbreaking that she doesn't have a chance to finish that success, Alicya Wix said. She was on break around 2:30 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 20) when police say a man in his 40s approached her and stabbed her in an alley near Woodward Avenue and Congress Street. Wix ran to a nearby business and collapsed. She was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police say surveillance video helped them capture the suspect about 20 minutes after the attack. The investigation is ongoing, but police say the attack appears to have been random. The suspect remains in custody. No charges have been filed. It is just hard to understand. We're just sad and have no words. Out of everything that can possibly happen in life, this is what took her out, Alicya Wix said. Wix leaves behind a 15-year-old daughter and many loved ones. Anybody that knows her knows that she was the life of the party, and she would talk your ear off, Alicya Wix said. The family has set up a GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses and to support Wix's daughter. #clickondetroit #CrimeInTheD ®
