DETROIT - The father of the children involved in a shooting that left an 11-year-old in critical condition on Detroit's west side is in custody, Detroit police confirmed. The incident occurred on Wednesday (Oct. 7) when Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said that the child was shot in the face by another child inside a home in the 8000 block of Artesian Street. Police received a 911 call at about 2:19 p.m. from a neighbor who reported hearing a gunshot from the home, Bettison said. Officers arrived within about three minutes. Three children, ages 11, nine, and four, were home alone when the shooting happened, according to police. Officers initially took the injured child to DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital before the child was transferred to Children's Hospital. Bettison said the child had been stabilized but remained in critical condition. Investigators believe an unsecured handgun was involved in the shooting. We know who was in the house. We know that they were alone. We know a child got a weapon. It was unsecured and shot one of their siblings, Bettison said during a news conference Wednesday. Bettison declined to identify which child fired the gun, saying investigators were interviewing the children to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. He said Wednesday that no one had been arrested at the time of the news conference. Police later confirmed that the children's father was in custody. Further details abo #clickondetroit #CrimeInTheD ®
