Family says insurer won't cover care for boy injured in crash before birth. Insurer says it's a billing issue DETROIT - In the spring of 2023, an eight-months-pregnant woman was driving near Inkster and Ford when a car fleeing Westland police hit her. She survived, but her baby had to be delivered by emergency C-section. Now, the family's attorneys say the insurance company isn't fully paying for the care they say mother and child need. The insurer says the dispute is about billing with a service provider. He was still in my daughter's womb when this accident happened, so it was a double concern, Michael Winton said. Winton is father to the woman, Angelica, and 3.5-year-old Sire's granddad. Following the crash, Angelica was rushed to the hospital, where Sire was delivered by emergency C-section. Today, Sire is a sweet, Lions-loving kid. But, his attorneys say the crash's impact has been profound. He was born with a traumatic brain injury, all caused by the reduction of oxygen and blood flow to the central nervous system, Lawrence Kajy said, the CEO of Kajy Law. His attorneys say doctors report Sire scores as low as the second percentile compared with other children his age. Angelica was left with life-changing effects, too. Her attorney says her brain function is now comparable to that of a 12-year-old. Her dad says those effects make it difficult for her to care for Sire on her own. Sire receives around-the-clock care from Diversified Home Health Care. They are providing shelter, and it's providing around the clock care for Sire. Caring for him and his needs, Kajy said. But, his attorneys say the healthcare company isn't being paid by their insurance company, USAA. USAA says they have paid over $7 million in policy benefits here. Attorneys say USAA hired a doctor to write a report on Sire's needs. She works at Henry Ford, Kajy Law Attorney Chris Mene said. It's funny, when you read the report, it's going all one direction - says Sire is in the second percentile for his age group, the bottom two percent, and he has all of these issues, potentiall #clickondetroit #CrimeInTheD ®
