Patel said the activists are filing a civil lawsuit against the city, Bettison and the Detroit Police Department.

She said Sheffield may also be named, and characterized the search warrant as retaliatory.

Among the group's demands, Williams called for a  very public apology  and Bettison's immediate removal.

Asked whether he regretted his actions, Smith said he did not regret bringing attention to the issue, but regretted what his son had experienced.

He also accused officials of weaponizing the police force against him.

The Detroit Police Department said it had no comment.

The city said it does not comment on pending litigation and would respond through a written court filing.
