What to know:

Two Detroit men were charged Friday in connection with a shooting in Southfield that police believe may have been a misguided act of revenge.

The shooting occurred just before 5:30 a.m. on September 28 at a home on the 29000 block of Sharon Lane.

The homeowner, 64-year-old Donald McCuin, was asleep when a man carrying an assault rifle knocked twice and opened fire, shooting nine rounds into the home.

McCuin and his 68-year-old cousin were not injured, but McCuin's 3-year-old pit bull, Kane, was wounded and had to be euthanized.

Police found a bullet lodged in McCuin's pants near his hip.

DeMarco Lewis, 29, and Larry Nelson Jr., 25, were arrested in Detroit on Wednesday.

Both men face charges of assault with intent to murder and multiple weapons offenses.

Police Chief Elvin Barren said Lewis confessed to the shooting, claiming he believed McCuin's son had stolen his car.

Just before 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 28, he was asleep in his home on the 29000 block of Sharon Lane in Southfield, when a man carrying an assault rifle walked up to the front door.

The man knocked twice and then opened fire on the home. In total, nine shots peppered the home.

 I woke up and said,  They're shooting at my house,'  Donald McCuin, the home's owner, said.  I was crawling around on the floor, and I saw the blood and said,  Oh s-t, they got me.' 

 I stood up and looked and realized they didn't get me,  he said.  Then saw Kane on the stairs and said,  Oh no, they got my dog!' 

Once police arrived, one of the officers found a bullet in McCuin's pocket.

 She pulled it out, and it was stuck in my pants, right there on my hip,  he said.  I can still feel it. 

McCuin, 64, was in the home with his 68-year-old cousin and his 3-year-old pit bull, Kane. While neither man was hurt, Kane was injured in the shooting and had to be euthanized.
