HOUSTON - U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia will host a joint press conference Friday morning to discuss the new developments in the ICE-involved shooting that killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo Tuesday in Houston's East End.

Garcia will be joined by Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare and Hugo Baldera-Ybarra, and the lawyer for the passengers who were in the vehicle with Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and detained by ICE following the shooting of Araujo.

Garcia will give details of her conversation with Acting ICE Director David Venturella.

According to the release, Hugo Baldera-Ybarra will discuss what he can share from his conversations with the three men who were in the vehicle with Araujo.

Harris County District Attorney Teare will provide an update on local fact-finding efforts and next steps.

Background on the shooting

According to ICE, the shooting happened around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday in the 6800 block of Canal Street while agents were attempting to arrest Salgado Araujo, who ICE identified as an undocumented immigrant from Mexico.

ICE officials said Salgado Araujo rammed an ICE vehicle and attempted to run over an ICE agent, prompting  our officer firing his weapon in self-defense.  Salgado Araujo was later pronounced dead at Ben Taub Hospital.

Family members and civil rights advocates have disputed portions of the federal account and are calling for an independent, transparent investigation into the shooting.

Salgado Araujo was not ICE's intended target

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a statement Thursday, stating their officers were conducting surveillance at a suspect's address after receiving a credible tip from law enforcement partners.

DHS says the traffic stop that ended in the shooting of Salgado Araujo on Tuesday was initiated after officers saw a white van with a person who resembled a suspect they were watching.
