A 34-year-old Houston man was charged with murder and tampering with a corpse Tuesday after investigators said they found his mother's body stuffed into a duffel bag during a Sept. 1 welfare check at their home.

Arman Malik is accused of killing his mother, Dyna Sorto De Malik, with his hands, then wrapping her body in bed sheets and stuffing it into a duffel bag, according to court records. Sheriff's deputies discovered Malik's mother's body when responding to a welfare check Sept. 1, a sheriff's office homicide detective stated in court records. A family member had reported they couldn't get in touch with the mother and was concerned. Deputies forced their way into the home after hearing no response, court records state.


Upon entering, a sergeant detected a smell he knew through his training and experience to be consistent with a decomposing body, court records state. The sergeant saw Malik sleeping and noticed a sheet in the middle of the room with blood on it. The sergeant removed the sheet to find an unzipped duffel bag with skin visible and an arm poking out. The body was identified as Malik's mother, court records state.

A search warrant for the home was obtained the same day. Authorities found Malik's mother's body wrapped in bloody sheets. The blood that had soaked onto the carpet was dark and coagulated, which court records said was consistent with it having been exposed to air for an extended period of time, court records state. Blood was also seen on a dresser in the room.
