han's name several times but she never responded. Sohail ended the call and began reaching out to friends to find out where Khan lived because she was concerned something was wrong. Conroe Police Officer Jessie Roland was first on the scene and testified about finding Khan. There was no sign of life and multiple stab wounds. Roland said he called out to Khan but there was no response. (Stab wounds) were everywhere, Roland said. Primarily, where I could see them, was on her torso, pretty much from (her face) to her torso. It was a little bit of shock; it was pretty traumatic. Most of Khan's family stepped out of the courtroom while prosecutors played Roland's body camera footage showing the gruesome scene as he approached Khan. One family member who stayed wept as the footage played. We wanted to sit with her, keep her safe, Roland said, adding that he stepped outside when officers explained what was happening to the teen. I didn't have the heart to sit in there for that. Roland eventually went to Fridrich's home where officers spoke with his mother and her boyfriend. He said they couldn't find him. They had called for a welfare check earlier that day, Roland said. As he approached, Fridrich lay down on the dirt road with his arms out. He was shirtless…he was covered in blood on his jeans, Roland said of Fridrich. He seemed defeated, unbothered almost. Fridrich was taken into custody without incident, Hughes said. A judge ordered a mental health examination after Fridrich's attorneys raised concerns about his competency, citing his mental health history and behavior in the days before Khan's death. A judge initially found him incompetent to stand trial. After he received treatment, Fridrich was found competent in September 2025 and returned from North Texas State Hospital to the Montgomery County Jail in October 2025. Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon recused himself and his office from prosecuting the case in June 2024 after Khan's family expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation's direction and scope, including whether the killing was a hate crime. Ligon said his office, the Conroe Police Department and the FBI had found no evidence that Khan was killed because of her ethnic or religious identity.
