An ocean water closure in Laguna Beach was in effect ahead of the holiday weekend due to a 2,000-gallon sewage spill.

The OC Health Care Agency's Environmental Health Division closed the beach one quarter (0.25) miles upcoast to one quarter (0.25) miles downcoast of Anita Street at Thalia Beach. The spill was caused by a malfunction of a force main sewer line pump.

The area will stay closed to ocean water contact for a minimum of three days and until the results of water quality monitoring are acceptable.
