The Long Beach Police Department asked for the public's help Thursday in identifying three people believed to be connected to a robbery that resulted in an off-duty officer firing shots over the weekend.

Police say the officer was in a residential area near Bixby Road and Orange Avenue at around 1:30 p.m. Sunday when two people approached him and allegedly robbed him at gunpoint. Details about what was taken from the officer were not released.

The officer then fired toward them, while they ran away, according to the department. It's unclear if the suspects were struck by gunfire.

Officials said the officer was not injured in the robbery.

Homicide detectives, who responded due to the police shooting, believe three people were involved in the robbery and that they took off in a black 2006-2011 Mercedes ML 350.

The SUV was last seen after the incident going south on Orange Avenue from 37th Street, according to police. The suspect vehicle has the following:

Temporary registration sticker in front window (passenger side)

5 spoke wheels (appear factory)

Tinted windows (right front passenger, right rear passenger and rear window broken out/damaged)

Identified as having a temporary California license plate at the time of the incident

Prior damage to right passenger doors

Missing chrome molding on right rear door

Missing the center cap on right front tire

Black roof rails

Sunroof

Two of the suspects were described by police as males in their late teens or early 20s, while the LBPD did not provide a description of the third suspect. They are considered armed and dangerous, police added.

Anyone who sees the suspect vehicle is asked to call 911.

The investigation into both the robbery and shooting is ongoing.
