A Rhode Island fugitive physician who was recently captured after being on the run for more than two decades had been living in Los Angeles, where he ran a biotech company, law enforcement sources confirmed.

Investigators said Dr. Ronald Fischer was accused of raping a woman on his boat, named  Lion King,  in 2003. He was taken into custody by the U.S. Coast Guard on a yacht named  The Silver Lining  off the coast of New York and New Jersey last week, NBC New York reported.

Despite leaving Rhode Island during his criminal trial in 2005, Fischer was convicted in absentia of first-degree sexual assault and has since also been wanted for failing to appear and flight to avoid prosecution.

Together, the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI and Rhode Island police spent two days since Tuesday exploring new leads about Fischer before ending up in New York.

The Marshals Service said the 56-foot sailboat that Fischer was caught on was registered under an alias he used:  Richard Graydon. 

According to law enforcement sources, he went by Richard Graydon while running a biotech company on Olympic Boulevard.

The company reported to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that he was dismissed on Friday for reasons not related to his work there.

NBCLA has reached out to the company for comment but has not received a response.
