MPD says the investigation remains active, and investigators have not detained any suspects. Police believe those responsible are still armed and on the run.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including the Memphis Police Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, ATF, and the Memphis Safe Task Force. Witnesses say police remained in the area well into the morning as investigators worked the scene.

For people who live nearby, the response was hard to miss.

Reyanna and GDN, who were staying at an apartment complex right down the street, said they heard the gunfire and initially thought it was right out their window.

It sounded like it was right here at our apartment complex, they said. It was really close.

They said that minutes after hearing the shots, they saw what appeared to be a large number of police vehicles rushing toward the area.

Another man who was getting gas at an Exxon several minutes from the shooting said he also noticed a heavy police presence.

The shooting is also raising concerns for people who have lived in the area before.

Leland Quarles, who used to live nearby, said a bullet shattered the back windshield of his vehicle last month while he was driving near Ridgeway and Mount Moriah.
