(WMC) - The Ripley Police Department has identified two suspects accused of robbing and beating an 87-year-old civil rights activist during a home invasion a month ago. Ripley Police Chief Mitchell Turner says detectives have issued arrest warrants for an unidentified minor and a man identified as Kevin Harper Jr. They each face numerous charges, including attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, especially aggravated burglary, especially aggravated robbery, aggravated abuse of an elderly person, three counts of financial exploitation of an elderly person, and three counts of theft. Chief Turner announced the case update Tuesday. This comes as a local community pillar, Dr. Ellena Gooch-Reid, continues to recover from an attack at her home that occurred on the morning of September 9. Dr. Gooch-Reid is a civil rights activist who stood beside the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis. She told Action News 5 that she spends some of her free time supporting local youth. Gooch-Reid told police she remembers a man entering her house on Eastland Avenue, robbing her and hitting her in the head with his fist and open hand. She was found hours later lying in her blood. Her purse, wallet, and phone were also missing after the attack. Gooch-Reid told Action News 5 she was helping a local minor shortly before the break-in. I had helped someone, a young person, to get some clothes for school, which is one of the things that I do. And I believe he was the one who came into my house and robbed me, Gooch-Reid said. Ripley police have not confirmed whether or not Dr. Gooch-Reid did assist one of the suspects that day. Click here to sign up for our newsletter! Click here to report a spelling or grammar error.
