According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, on Saturday, at around 1:32 a.m., deputies received a call about a hit-and-run near the 200 block of Sheridan Street. When deputies arrived and fire rescue crews arrived, they found a man lying on the roadway, and he was pronounced dead. The man's identity was not released. Investigators said that the man was crossing the westbound lanes of Sheridan Street when he was hit by a Hyundai, and the driver didn't stay at the scene and kept driving. An arrest report said detectives received information that the suspect's vehicle was at a dealership in North Miami Beach, and when they went to meet the manager, the vehicle was secured at a parking garage and was consistent with a collision. Detectives, the report said, were told that the vehicle was a rental. As the investigation continued, detectives spoke to an employee at the dealership who told them Maldonado, who is also an employee, asked him to give her a repair estimate on a car she was driving, the report said. When the employee inspected the vehicle, he noticed that the damage was not caused by a crash with another vehicle, and when he asked Maldonado about it, she said she was driving near Hollywood when she hit someone and left, the report said. The employee then told his manager about what happened, and the manager spoke to Maldonado and asked for the key to the vehicle, the report said. The manager told investigators that Maldonado left the dealership, but called her to return, and she did. Maldonado, the report said, then spoke with detectives, and she told them she took the vehicle from the dealership without their knowledge a day before the incident and went to the beach in Hollywood.
