FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A Lauderhill police officer accused of moving into a deceased man's home after discovering his body during a welfare check appeared before a Broward County judge Wednesday, where he was granted a $25,000 bond. After posting bond on Wednesday, Sguros, wearing two surgical masks over his face, sprinted away from cameras as he left the Broward Main Jail. The allegations date back to July 11, 2022, when Sguros and another Lauderhill police officer responded to a welfare check at a home at 4551 NW 12th St. A neighbor had contacted authorities after becoming concerned about the homeowner, Dennis Ionis West, who had not been seen for approximately two weeks. Officers entered the home and discovered West's badly decomposed body. An autopsy later determined that West died of cardiovascular disease, and his death was ruled natural. According to a 21-page arrest affidavit from the Broward Sheriff's Office, Sguros subsequently took possession of the property, moved into the home with his partner and began making renovations. Investigators said Sguros used West's personal identification information in connection with improvements to the property, including a building permit application submitted more than two years after West's death.
