A Milwaukee police officer was hit by a suspect's car while responding to gunshots downtown early Sunday morning.

Police said officers patrolling the downtown district heard gunshots near Water Street and Knapp Street around 2:15 a.m.


Police said the driver who fired the shots struck an officer with their car while driving off.

Police said the 25-year-old officer and two other officers fired at the car.

Police said they found the car unoccupied near 12th Street and Walnut Street. Police said they found one gun in the car and another in the area.

Police said the driver, an 18-year-old man, was found nearby. Police said the driver was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital and arrested.

The 25-year-old officer hit by the car was also taken to a hospital. Police said she has less than a year of service and is undergoing treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the other officers who fired their weapons were a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old man. All three officers will be placed on administrative duty.

Police said two other people arrived at a hospital with gunshot injuries, but they said it is not clear if they were injured during this incident or the shots fired that officers responded to.

The Milwaukee Police Homicide Unit is investigating the incident.
