Memorial fund honors 10-year-old killed in Geneva Lake boat tragedy The fundraiser for Kathryn  Kate  Schmidt will support children in need through sports and animal-related causes.

A memorial fund has been established for the third child who died when a boat capsized during a severe storm on Lake Geneva.

The GoFundMe campaign identifies Kathryn  Kate  Schmidt as the third victim of the July 3 incident. She died alongside her two cousins, 6-year-old Caleb Oswald and 7-year-old Abigail Oswald.


According to the fundraiser organized by Jonathon Schmidt of Batavia, Illinois, the family is directing donations to support children in need rather than accepting flowers or traditional funeral donations.

 The funds raised will help children in need who can't afford sports like tennis or softball, or who wish to adopt animals,  the GoFundMe page states.  This is something that will keep her memory shining in our lives and in the lives of others, carrying forward the love and generosity she always showed. 

The three children were among 10 people aboard a boat that overturned on Lake Geneva when an unprecedented storm struck Walworth County. The National Weather Service confirmed that winds reached up to 100 mph during the storm.

Lake Geneva police rescued six adults and one child from the water. Authorities noted that all four children on the boat were wearing life jackets.

The fundraiser describes Kate as a girl with a bubbly personality who loved playing tennis and softball, spending time with animals, painting, and being with friends and family.

 Whether you met her once or knew her well, she would brighten your life any time of day,  the page reads.

The Schmidt family also extended their gratitude to the Lake Geneva Police Department and all first responders for their assistance following the incident.
