Man charged after Water Street gunfire, officer struck in chase Prosecutors say a man removed from Summerfest later fired into a crowd near Water Street, hit a Milwaukee officer with a car and led police on a chase.

According to a criminal complaint, a group of teens was removed from Summerfest for being  rowdy  and wearing masks. The incident ended hours later with an officer hit by a speeding car, gunfire in a crowded parking lot, and a crash that hospitalized two people.

Hunter L. Meyer, 18, faces ten charges after prosecutors say he fired a handgun into a crowd near Milwaukee's Water Street district over the Fourth of July weekend, struck a police officer with his car, and led officers on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash.


Gunfire in a Crowded Lot

Court documents say that about 2:15 a.m. on July 5, officers working a crowd-control detail spotted a black 2015 Audi S6 spinning circles in a parking lot at 1301 North Edison St. Then came the gunshots.

An officer approached the Audi, shined a flashlight on the driver, later identified as Meyer, and ordered him out. According to the complaint, Meyer accelerated, nearly hitting the officer.

According to the criminal complaint, as the car sped out of the lot, it headed toward two other officers, one of whom jumped clear and struck a third officer on foot. The third officer sustained a leg laceration and told investigators she fired her weapon  to try and stop the vehicle from continuing to strike her and others. 

Officers reported hearing as many as 15 shots. Investigators recovered 20 casings from multiple firearms, three bullet fragments, an airsoft pistol and a Glock with a full-auto switch. At least one vehicle was hit by gunfire.

The Chase and Crash

Pole cameras captured the Audi speeding away, swerving through traffic and crossing into oncoming lanes, the complaint states.

Meyer ran a red light on West Fond Du Lac Avenue and slammed into a 2024 Toyota RAV4 at 1100 West Fond Du Lac Ave. The RAV4's driver was taken to a hospital with head and back pain and lost consciousness. The Audi didn't stop.
