Police Department released a statement noting leadership became aware of the incident shortly after it occurred.

 An initial review indicated that the use of force did not appear to be consistent with State of Wisconsin guidelines or West Allis Police Department use of force policies and training,  the department stated.

The department contacted neighboring authorities to conduct an independent outside investigation. Following cooperation from internal personnel, the investigating agency referred the matter to the district attorney's office.

The officer was placed on administrative desk duty during the investigation and has since been moved to administrative suspension following the criminal charges.

 The West Allis Police Department is committed to ensuring that officers conduct themselves within the law, State of Wisconsin use of force training and the policies and training of the West Allis Police Department,  the statement read.

If convicted of acting in excess of lawful authority, the officer could face up to three years and six months in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
