Authorities in Shawano County are asking for the public's help after a dog was found with eight gunshot wounds near Cedar Drive and Maple Road in the Town of Maple Grove.

The Shawano County Sheriff's Office said it received the report July 15. The dog was taken to Specialized Veterinary Care of Shawano for emergency treatment and is now in the care of the Shawano County Humane Society, which named the dog  Sunny. 


Veterinary staff said Sunny, a brown mixed-breed dog weighing about 35 pounds and believed to be about 8 years old, suffered the eight gunshot wounds, a broken leg, and other traumatic injuries. Officials believe the injuries happened about two to four days before the dog was found.

Investigators said little is known about the dog's history or where it came from before it was located. Sunny has a microchip registered to an out-of-state individual, and investigators are working with the humane society to identify previous owners or any shelters that may have cared for the dog.

There are no known witnesses or suspects, authorities said.

Officials said Sunny remains under veterinary supervision and is awaiting medical clearance before undergoing additional procedures.

The sheriff's office thanked the Shawano County Humane Society and Specialized Veterinary Care of Shawano for caring for the dog and said the humane society is accepting donations to help cover Sunny's treatment and recovery.
