Caledonia dog shot, killed, 54-year-old man arrested The owners of the dog said she got loose in their neighborhood before returning home wounded

The Caledonia Police Department said they've arrested a 54-year-old man from Caledonia in connection to a shooting that resulted in a 2-year-old dog dying.

It happened July 15, according to the dog owners. Their dog, Chili, got loose Wednesday night.


 She must have saw a squirrel or something; she hopped the fence. She was out for only two minutes,  AJ Larson said.

The Larson family said they then heard a loud clap and heard Chili yelping and screaming. Chili then hopped a fence and ran right back to the family. She collapsed in their kitchen after she returned home.

The Larson family then took her to a veterinarian, but it was too late. Doctors confirmed a pellet bullet struck her.

The Larson family said Chili was not known to be an aggressive dog.

 She was a good dog, and she did not deserve to be shot and killed,  Amanda Larson said.

Caledonia police said a low-caliber weapon was used in this shooting.

 We don't want to speculate on why. Our entire goal here is to bring some awareness that any gun, doesn't matter if it's a BB or pellet, can kill,  AJ Larson said.

Police said they arrested the 54-year-old man on July 23 around 1 p.m.

He is currently in custody at the Caledonia Police Department and will be taken to the Racine County Jail this evening.

The man's name is not being released at this time because charges have not been filed. The case will be presented to the Racine County District Attorney's Office on Friday.

 While we are pleased to have located and arrested the offender, his arrest will not bring Chili back, nor will it heal the pain felt by the family,  the Caledonia Police Department said in a release.
