Problematic raised crosswalk in Milwaukee set for reconstruction Intersection at 10th and Mitchell will close Friday as crews remove and rebuild the raised crosswalk.

A raised crosswalk that drivers say has become a hazard on Milwaukee's south side is set to be removed and rebuilt.

The Milwaukee Department of Public Works said the intersection of South 10th and West Mitchell streets will close at approximately 10 a.m. Friday as crews begin saw cutting.


The work is the first step toward fully removing and reconstructing the raised crosswalk. Repairs are expected to continue into next week.

DPW previously installed a temporary asphalt patch to make the climb less steep, but drivers were still seen carefully maneuvering over the raised crossing to avoid damaging their vehicles.

 We had to go over it,  driver Ray Sevilla said.  I thought my car was going to fly. It's just ridiculous. It's just too high right now. 

DPW said last week's heat wave caused the raised crosswalk to heave even higher. A large crack can now be seen stretching across the mound.

The raised crosswalk was installed to slow speeding and reckless drivers while improving pedestrian safety. However, neighbors and drivers said it had instead become a hazard.

 It's horrible,  Milwaukee resident Tony Menore said.  We scraped our car at least a couple times just going through there. 

The intersection is in a busy area for drivers and pedestrians. The closure could affect traffic through the neighborhood as crews complete the reconstruction.
