Mary is not alone. The scam is sweeping the country. 12 News Investigates has been speaking to victims and police for more than 18 months. More than 60 victims have lost more than $21 million in the scam, which typically instructs victims to purchase gold bars.

The Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin issued its own warning about the gold courier scam after three people, including Mary, reported it to them. The total loss was almost $3 million between the three.

 The combined total between the three is probably the largest amount that the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin has seen reported, especially in such a short period of time,  said Lisa Schiller, senior director, investigations and media relations with BBB Wisconsin.

Schiller says not to click on any pop-up ads, hang up on suspicious callers and keep your personal information close.

 You never want to entrust your bank account information, your personal information with somebody over the phone that you don't know, that you can't verify,  she said.

Mary wants others to learn from her experience. She has created a GoFundMe as well for people to donate to help. The likelihood she receives any money back from the thieves is slim.

 If you do find yourself in the middle of this right now, stop,  she said.  Don't give them any more money. Go to the police. 

Oshkosh police are investigating Mary's case and told 12 News that they are looking for suspects and video.

 These guys should be looking over their shoulders now, because I'm pissed,  Mary said.  Don't get me pissed. So, we will be after them.
