im outside and repeatedly ordered him to drop his gun, he did not. He ultimately pointed the weapon toward officers before police shot and stopped him. This was not a close call. It was a miracle that no police officer or innocent person inside District 5 was killed. Parker-Bell was ultimately found not criminally responsible by reason of mental disease or defect and, in June 2023, was committed to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services for 30 years. That was barely three years ago. And today, Judge Kashyap determined that he is a candidate for conditional release and ordered the state to prepare a plan for that release. The members of the Milwaukee Police Association have a simple question: How can someone who walked into a police station and opened fire, endangering officers and innocent citizens, already be considered for release back into the community after three years? Our officers remember February 25, 2022, and the people who were inside District 5 that afternoon remember it. They should not have to wonder how someone committed to state custody for 30 years after such an extraordinarily violent act can be considered for conditional release just a few years later. Mental illness deserves treatment. Public safety also matters. The Milwaukee Police Association strongly opposes the conditional release of Darreon Parker-Bell and will be watching closely as the Department of Health Services develops the release plan ordered by the court. Our officers put their lives on the line to stop Parker-Bell that day. They, and the public they protected, deserve better than this.
