ganizers also want people to understand that domestic violence does not always involve physical abuse. She said abuse can include name-calling, emotional and mental abuse, controlling someone's finances and abuse through social media. It slowly creeps up on you and eats at your self-esteem, Badger said. Hayden said people experiencing abuse often need a support system around them as they determine what to do next. You don't have to have all the answers, Hayden said. Just take this step in this moment. McFarlane's family created a team called Dreamers for Saturday's race. Family members said the name reflects McFarlane's personality and the ambitions she had for herself and her children. She was a big dreamer. She had big ideas. Businesswoman, professional, a family member said. We just want to continue that on in the legacy for her children. Hayden said organizers were touched by McFarlane's death last year and wanted to connect with her family. This year, the family reached out and formed a team for the race. To have them here this year ... means the world because her life, it shows that her life was not in vain, Hayden said. And she continues to live on through all of us. For McFarlane's family, Saturday was also an opportunity to speak directly to people who may currently be experiencing abuse. They don't have to be alone, a family member said. It's someone that's willing to listen, help any way they can. Organizers said this year's #LetThemLive 5K raised more than $15,000 - the most the event has raised in a single year. Hayden said the money will support the organization's work with Tenor High School and Messmer High School, including its No More Mean Girls curriculum focused on healthy and unhealthy relationships. Organizers said their goal extends beyond one race each year. They want survivors to know resources and support are available and encourage communities to recognize the different forms abuse can take. We hear you. We see you, Badger said, and we want to continue to do that educational work throughout the communities.
