(CNN) - A man was shot during an encounter with federal immigration agents in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, according to the New York Police Department.

Just after 4 p.m., agents with ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations - a branch of ICE focused on arresting undocumented immigrants - encountered a person they were targeting, according to preliminary information from a law enforcement source.

The agents shot into the man's vehicle while a 5-year-old, who is uninjured, was sitting in the backseat of the car, according to a law enforcement official.

The man's injuries, which included a graze wound to the neck, were not considered life-threatening, and police transported him to the hospital in a police car and did not wait for an ambulance, according to the law enforcement source.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement its agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation to arrest an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic with prior criminal convictions and multiple arrests when a federal agent discharged a weapon, injuring the man.

He has associations to the Trinitarios gang, DHS said in a statement.

DHS said agents immediately provided aid after the man was shot but did not explain what led to the shooting during the operation.

The man who was shot by ICE agents is 28 years old, according to a law enforcement source.

His criminal record includes a 2023 arrest for robbery, to which he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of grand larceny and was placed on probation for five years. He has a pending indictment for the sale of a controlled substance, the source added.

Two agents were also injured in the encounter, according to the source, and they also are being treated at a local hospital. One of the agents may have been injured in a car accident, though it's unclear if the accident was part of the attempted arrest or response, according to a federal official.

At the time of the shooting, witnesses reported to police they saw a man dressed in a bright yellow constructio
