Man charged after Fond du Lac crash severely injures woman A man has been charged with causing great bodily harm while driving with a suspended license after a crash in Fond du Lac severely injured a woman. Elmer Jose Cardona Bustillo made his initial court appearance Wednesday on a charge of knowingly operating a motor vehicle while suspended, causing great bodily harm. According to the criminal complaint, Cardona Bustillo was driving home from work in Oshkosh about 5:40 a.m. Oct. 9 when he struck a woman crossing the road. He told officers at the scene that he did not see her. The Fond du Lac County District Attorney's Office identified the victim as a 50-year-old woman with Down syndrome. Court records show the woman was airlifted to a Milwaukee hospital with severe injuries, including a brain bleed, fractured collarbone, facial fractures and bleeding in her liver. Her caseworker later told authorities that she was on a ventilator and that her condition was not good. A judge set Cardona Bustillo's bail at $25,000 Wednesday. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 23. Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney said Cardona Bustillo has been under a final order of removal since 2015. Toney said he expects U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to place a detainer on Cardona Bustillo. #wisn #crimewatchmilwaukee
