A welfare check at a Buckhead home spiraled into a homicide investigation Tuesday afternoon after police discovered a woman dead and detained her barricaded son following a forced entry.

What we know:

Atlanta police officers responded to a welfare check call at the Habersham Townhomes located in the 3500 block of Roswell Road around 1:36 p.m. Tuesday after a family member alerted authorities.

When units arrived at the scene, they learned that a 41-year-old man appeared to have barricaded himself inside the house. Officers forced their way into the home and immediately detained him.

As law enforcement teams searched further inside the home, they found an unresponsive 71-year-old woman.

Medics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police believe the fatal situation stemmed from a domestic incident between the victim and her son, who was the man detained on the scene.

What they're saying:

Lt. Chris Butler with the Atlanta Police Department stated the situation may be connected to an NFL football player, though that player is not the person currently in custody.

Investigators discovered that the Buckhead address has a history of prior police calls, including an incident in April.

Family members told investigators that the individual in custody has a history of potential mental health issues. Neighbors have been working with homicide investigators to help build a timeline of the events leading up to the killing.
