Mayor Mamdani, who knew Diallo, said he was  heartbroken  to hear news of his death.

 I knew him first as a friendly face in Albany - someone whose greeting and smile was as dependable as the sun rising each morning. I will miss him, as I know anyone who had the good fortune of knowing him will,  Mamdani said in a statement.  I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and to the community he made better each and every day. We mourn him, and we know that his legacy of service and kindness will endure. 

A spokesman for the state Attorney General noted their office is tasked with investigating  every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.
