An attempt to check if a Brooklyn bus rider paid his fare erupted into a physical confrontation, with the passenger, a public school aide, trying to push past two transit workers who then shoved him against a bus stop shelter. The clash erupted as Kyle Taylor was commuting to Mott Hall Bridges Academy, the Brownsville middle school where he is an aide. He used his debit card to pay for his fare on the B15 bus before transferring to the B14 as usual, he says. As he got off the back exit of the second bus at Pitkin and Rockaway Aves., a short walk from the school, Taylor, 53, was stopped by two transit workers assigned to the Evasion and Graffiti Lawlessness Eradication (EAGLE) team. Comprised of unarmed transit employees, the MTA's EAGLE teams have been tasked with combating pervasive fare evasion on the agency's bus system. They can issue tickets to fare beaters but are not among the state's sworn peace officers. Since the switch to tap-to-pay fares on city buses, the EAGLE teams have been equipped with hand-held readers designed to verify that a debit card, credit card, OMNY card or phone has in fact been used to pay for the bus. Nearly half of the city's bus riders don't pay their fare, according to MTA data. Show me how you paid your fare, Taylor remembers the workers saying. Taylor told the EAGLE team the transfer wouldn't show up on his debit card - only the initial payment on the first bus he boarded. The transfers are, in fact, supposed to register. The team then asked him for ID. One of them said, Give me your ID,' Taylor said. I said I paid my fare. Why do you want my ID? Can I please get off the bus?' They said, You're not getting off this bus.' Taylor said he then tried to get past the agents and a physical clash ensued. I tried to squeeze through on the right side and that's when they grabbed me, Taylor said. They threw me against the bus, slammed my head against the bus … At that point I was a little dizzy. Then they slammed me against the bus shelter and I hit my head again. Surveillance video from a nearby deli viewed by the Daily News shows Taylor p #nydailynews #crimewatchnewyork
