FERGUSON, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A 35-year-old mother of five was shot and killed Tuesday night at a BP gas station on West Florissant Road in Ferguson while walking back to her car with two of her children. Ferguson police identified the victim as Shakeela Martin of Ferguson. She had taken her 9-year-old and 6-year-old children to the gas station to buy slushies when she was struck by gunfire. Police said she was an innocent victim. What police say happened Investigators said an argument broke out inside the convenience store shortly before Martin arrived. As she was walking back to her car with her children, gunfire erupted from a nearby vehicle. Martin was struck and killed. A second person, a man, was also shot and survived with critical injuries. Police said he was also an innocent victim. A shattered glass door at the station was boarded up following the shooting, and bullet holes were visible on the side of the building. Community reacts Ferguson resident Curtis Ware said the shooting left the community outraged and grieving. I just feel like the violence needs to stop, man. That's all I can say. I can't really elaborate on too much. I just feel like everything needs to stop, Ware said. Ferguson resident Sterling Henderson said he was concerned about the impact on Martin's children. It's sad, two young kids. You know, I heard she had five kids. So two of the young kids who seen this, they're going to have a hard time. They're going to need some therapy or something, Henderson said. Victim remembered Martin worked at a Rally's restaurant on Page Avenue. Renada McGhee said she became Facebook friends with Martin after meeting her at the restaurant and noticing it looked like Martin was having a bad day. And so we said, can we pray for you?' and she said, sure.' And when we prayed for her, she started crying. And she said, Thank you, I needed that,' McGhee said. Pattern of gas station shootings The shooting at the BP is the sixth gas station shooting reported in the area in the last three months.
