ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - An East St. Louis man pleaded guilty to assault Thursday morning after he was accused of seriously injuring a Ferguson officer during a protest in 2024.

Elijah Gantt pleaded guilty to second-degree assault on a special victim and resisting arrest.

On the 10 year anniversary of the death of Michael Brown, Gantt had joined a protest outside of the Ferguson Police Department.

During the protest, investigators say Gantt participated in damage to a police department gate. Police said officers had told Gantt to stop, and he was being arrested. Then, they said, Gantt walked away and then ran.

During a foot pursuit, investigators said Gantt ran into Ferguson Officer TJ Brown. Officer Brown was knocked over and hit his head on the ground.

Brown suffered a serious brain injury in the incident and was put into a medically induced coma. In April of this year, Brown returned to Ferguson after stints at rehab facilities in Atlanta and Omaha.

Gantt is set to be sentenced on Nov. 20.
