GRANITE CITY, Ill. (First Alert 4) - Kathleen Mayes said her family's two dogs, Molly and Bella, were killed Tuesday night when another dog attacked them during their regular evening walk along Boyle Avenu in Granite City. Molly, a Maltipoo, belonged to Mayes. Bella, a Pomeranian, belonged to her mother. Mayes said she rescued Molly from a pound and the dog had belonged to her husband. She was the sweetest dog you ever met. I laugh that sometimes she was a little bit of a bully with the other dogs, but in reality, she was a sweetheart, Mayes said. She was my husband's dog. My husband passed away seven years ago, so she was part of what I had left to him. She was my buddy. Mayes said she got Bella about a year ago for her mom. She was a typical Pomeranian. Begged for attention, pranced on the hind legs. She loved kids. Just loved to kiss on the kids, she said. Part of the daily routine: Mayes, Molly and Bella would go for an evening walk around the block. That was what had them out Tuesday night. I was walking the dogs down my street and around the block behind my house, like I do every day. I got to the middle of the street behind me, and I didn't even see the dog. I didn't even hear it. The dog attacked my dogs. It ran at Bella and killed her instantly. Grabbed her neck and killed her. Came after Molly. Molly was trying to fight her off. I actually got a hold of the dog and pulled it off of Molly. Of course, I got bit in the process, Mayes said. Mayes said two men saw what was happening and came to help her. Some young gentlemen who... thank you so much. I don't know them, but I have to find them and thank them. Came to try to help me. I just kind of handed them the dog. I think they tried to restrain it, Mayes said. Even with the help, she said the dog continued to attack at Molly. Mayes said neighbors heard her screaming and helped her get home so she could drive Molly to an emergency veterinarian. I'm in the middle of the street, picking up my dog, holding her intestines in, trying to get back to my house so I could get her to the emergency vet, Mayes said. May #firstalert4 #crimewatchstlouis
