es said they weren't able to save her. She said, Those dogs were just about everything to me. Mayes said the events of Tuesday night are constantly replaying in her mind, and it's been hard to process. I've lived here for 27 years. I shouldn't be afraid to walk my dog down the street. My nieces and great nieces and nephews walk dogs with me when they come over to swim. What if they were with me? It's just unacceptable, she said. According to the incident report from Granite City police, the owner of the attacking dog believes it escaped from a fenced-in backyard. The report said the owner took the dog to a relative in Missouri. Mayes said she learned where the dog was by obtaining the police report. The dog is... Where? I don't know. That's what my frustration. I can't get my dogs back. What's happening to this dog? This dog is over across state lines somewhere. They told me it doesn't have rabies. Who's monitoring that? Mayes said. Mayes said that has left her questioning how this is being handled. She said the dog should be quarantined and monitored at a licensed facility. She is waiting to learn if the dog has rabies. I know it has not had shots. I know that we're on a 10-day quarantine to make sure it does not show signs of rabies. That quarantine should be facilitated in an animal control, veterinary, Mayes said. Mayes said she also wants the dog to be deemed a danger. Mayes said she contacted Madison County Public Health about the case. She also is waiting for information from police or animal control. She said it's been suggested she get the shot. Mayes said she was bitten while pulling the dog off Molly and later received treatment. I'm assuming when I grabbed the dog, it was trying to get my dog. It nailed me here pretty well. Swelling's gone down quite a bit. I mean, I got my tetanus shot and my antibiotics, Mayes said. Granite City Police and Animal Control did not respond to a request for an update on the investigation. In the incident report, a neighbor told police there have been prior incidents in which the dog was unleashed and aggressive.
