ST. FRANCOIS COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The family of a 16-year-old girl killed over the weekend in St. Francois County is asking for answers about how she died and why it took days for the family to learn a sheriff's deputy was involved directly from the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department, as other questions linger. The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department are investigating separate aspects of the case. Persephone Berger died Saturday morning on Davis Crossing Road, close to her home west of Park Hills, her aunt, Kimberly Cabuchola, said. She was a good kid, and she was named after me. So she got to be my little namesake. So, of course, I'm partial, Cabuchola said. Berger was the youngest of four children. Cabuchola said her brother, Berger's father, was the first person she heard from after the crash. He told me I had some horrible, terrible news. I said, what is it? He said, Persephone was involved in a hit and run, and she's dead, Cabuchola said. Cabuchola said Berger snuck out to a party nearby and was walking home when she was hit. She said the St. Francois County Sheriff's Department initially told her brother it was a hit-and-run Saturday after the crash. Cabuchola said she posted about the hit-and-run on social media, asking anyone with information about what happened on Davis Crossing Road to contact her. She said witnesses told her a deputy was involved. Cabuchola said they didn't hear that from the sheriff's department until Monday afternoon. Nobody said anything to my brother. Nobody contacted my brother. Only one that contacted him within that three-day was the coroner, to tell us that she was so badly mangled that we needed to have a closed coffin for her, Cabuchola said. She said the difference between what they were initially told and what they've come to learn is where the frustration comes from, and that more clarity is still needed. She added, What do you think I'm feeling? Anger. Not because the cop hit her. I mean, accidents happen. But to try to cover it up and to lie to our family? Why?
