(First Alert 4) -Two 20-year-old women remain jailed on $100,000 cash-only bonds after prosecutors say they assaulted an off-duty Hillsdale police officer working secondary as security at a Spanish Lake QuikTrip - an attack captured on video now viewed millions of times. St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Melissa Price Smith spoke exclusively with First Alert 4 about the Oct. 11 incident at the QuikTrip on Lusher Road. According to court documents, the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Prosecutors say Nayonna Griffin began throwing items at the officer. When he approached her, Shaniya Lewis threw him to the ground and began punching him. Griffin then stomped on his head while he was on the ground. Court records state Lewis attempted to take the officer's firearm but was unsuccessful. The officer was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. Smith said he is recovering at home and is expected to return to work in the coming days. I was absolutely horrified and startled by the video, Smith said. It was horrible. Lewis is charged with second-degree assault and attempt to disarm a police officer. Griffin is charged with second-degree assault and resisting arrest for a felony. Second-degree assault against a special victim, a law enforcement officer, is a B felony punishable by 5 to 15 years in prison. Attempt to disarm an officer and resisting a felony arrest each carry up to four years. Smith said both women had their first court appearance Tuesday and were calm in court. They didn't quite have the confidence or attitude they had in the video, Smith said. Smith credited the store clerk for calling 911 immediately and thanked St. Louis County police for responding quickly and arresting both suspects on scene. These are very, very serious crimes, Smith said. We will not tolerate that. Both suspects are due back in court Oct. 20 for bond hearings.
