FERGUSON, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A Ferguson nonprofit farm that helps feed those in the community is now asking that same community for help, after two utility vehicles were stolen over the weekend. It really throws a wrench into the plans of the farm, Will Delacey, production manager with EarthDance, stated. EarthDance Organic Farm School on Dade Avenue is dedicated to advancing food justice and providing support to the Ferguson community and beyond. We're trying to grow as much food to feed as many families as we can, and we're also trying to teach as many people as we can how to do it themselves, Delacey exclaimed. The organization teaches farmers and gardeners of all ages to grow organic food, and then shares the food that they grow on the farm with the community on a pay-what-you-can' basis. Right now is an important time of year. We're in the middle of our biggest fall harvest, Delacey said. And so we have the most food to bring in on the farm that we do all year. However, those plans have hit a hurdle after thieves stole two utility vehicles from the property over the weekend. Delacey explained that they use those vehicles to bring in everything that they grow across the property. Without them, he worries about the potential impact it could have on the community in need. We relied heavily on those gators and the community relies heavily on us to provide fresh food, Delacey explained. Unfortunately, we're in a food desert and so many people, based on a lot of different circumstances, don't have access to clean vegetables and organic vegetables, and it's really nice to be able to have a farm to supply those. This incident comes on the heels of a wave of property thefts across the St. Louis area. Criminologists First Alert 4 spoke with recently said it could be for several reasons. There's always going to be some concern that with any kind of economic hardship or difficulties in the economy, we might see an increase there, Joe Zlatic, associate professor of criminology at St. Louis University, said.
